The Hinako’s Islands are one of the most consistent surf destinations in the entire world. Its broad exposure towards the southern Indian Ocean provides these islands with consistency and high quality waves.

There is no other place on the planet which offers high quality surf and no crowd! There are five waves strewn throughout the islands, in maximum range of 15-30 minutes and two more 40-50 minutes by speedboat.

The Puri Asu Resort is determined to help you get the most out of what the Asu Island has to offer, while still giving you the convenience and comfort of coming home to your own private, clean bed every night.

Roughly 100% of the waves in the Hinako’s can be accessed within a maximum of 30 minutes by our speedboat , and the best ones are right in our own backyard, 5 minutes by our speedboat from our pier to line-up, safe and dry!

Bawa is the furthest island, and still, it’s only a short 20-30 minutes away, and it offers longer and wider barrels than Asu when it’s firing. Here you’ll find challenging waves like Bommie and rippable barrelled waves like Hamutala. And within 40/50 minutes we get Salonako and Afulu in West Nias.

Our surf guides receive regular surf forecasts, and will give you recommendations based on swell, wind, and your own desires. One day, we may decide it’s a good idea to take a day trip North to the Nias area or we could go South for waves such as Salonako, Afulu or Lagundri Bay. Or, we could simply stay put to enjoy the waves on our own private beach.

There is no doubt Asu have some of the best waves in Indonesia. Perfect and consistent. And we’re here to put you into the best waves of your life.

Seasons and Swell

During your stay at Puri Asu Resort, you will most likely witness 1-3 predominant swells come and go, depending on your trip duration. As the swell rises, Asu grows from medium size (fun for everybody), and gradually becomes more intense, suiting those surfers with a little more experience.

The peak of the swell may last 1-3 days, and then gradually begin to subside, making Asu friendlier for everybody.

This cycle continually repeats itself throughout the main surfing season (April 01 – October 30), which makes Puri Asu Resort an ideal travel destination for any surfer. The surf breaks only 700m away from the resort pier and the transfer is always made by boat.

April and May: Medium swells and glassy conditions

June: Solid swells and generally clean conditions

July and August: Big swells and strong offshore winds

September: Mixed size swells and clean conditions

October: Consistent medium swells and great conditions

November: Clean Conditions and small to medium sized swells

ALL MONTHS HAVE WAVES AND OPTIONS FOR ALL LEVELS OF SURFER!!!

Waves

Asu - has a perfect, consistent left hand wave that works on all tides, big and small swells, and south wind conditions. Asu is a unique wave. From 2-8 feet, it is a perfect and fun wave peeling over coral reef. For the surfer, Asu provides the opportunity to improve your surfing. At 4- 5 feet, Asu becomes more challenging and starts to barrel from the take-off, offering more power and lip for doing manoeuvres and getting barrelled. When it gets to 6-12 feet, it becomes a tube on the take off, and two more barrelled sections in some waves with intense walls. If it’s over 8 feet, you will need a little more experience.

Bawa – is a great option on a day that has a northerly wind with a south swell. It's ideal for those who want an empty, solid wave, on their own.

Hamutala – is the neighbour to Bawa Island. It's a friendly wave, up to 8-feet with 2 perfect sections with barrels and rippable walls.

Bommie – is a deep water slab, located between Asu and Hinako Island and provides short and challenging tube rides with a rippable end section.

Sirombu – is a rippable and short right-hander located near the Sirombu harbour. Its the best for beginner surfers and has an occassional barrel section

Salonako – is located 30-40 minutes from Asu. This is known as the ''Super Perfect'' right-hander and can provide challenging barrel rides. It also works on hte larger ground swell.

Afulu – is located 40-50 minutes from Asu. This is a peeling left-hander on the Nias mainland and offers incredible tube rides with rippable walls.
